Carl and I tried again and again to help the little family, but there was only so much a mortal can do. Carl grew fed up. “Family is not everything,” he said. He was protective of our tranquillity. When Jacob Rother, Carl’s only surviving relative, came to New York on a visit, Carl felt it was the last straw. He did not wish the family black sheep to remind him of what had happened to the Rothers. He lashed out at Jacob’s nerve for trying to contact us. “That’s all I need is that thief back in our life.” I argued, only meekly, that Jacob was a successful businessman in Melbourne. I pointed out that he was still young, in his early fifties, and had probably changed a lot. I remembered how handsome he had been. I did not say “He is your only relative,” because of course Carl was all too aware of that. It fell to me to call Jacob in his midtown hotel and explain that Carl was too busy to see him. Jacob said, “And what about you, doll. Don’t you want to see me?” My sympathy dissolved. He had no manners, and I was pleased to say, “No, Jacob Rother, actually I don’t.”

“I have George Smith,” said Carl. “I don’t need to have a brother.” It occurred to me that I felt the same way about my brother Otto, so I could not argue.
